Chapter 15
Faith leaned awkwardly against the wall outside Tricia’s room as nurses bustled past her, carts rattled down halls, and phones rang.
Thankfully, it didn’t take long for Kane to come out, his hat pushed back on his head, eyes narrowed, mouth pulled down. Had the visit gone badly?”
“How is she?” Faith asked.
“She’s beat up bad.” Rage flashed across Kane’s face. “And she was terrified about the kids, but I let her know they are fine. I’m going to take her back to the ranch, but I need to get her some clothes first. So, let’s get out of here,” he concluded.
“Wait,” Faith said, as he turned to head back the way they’d come. “Can I see her for just a moment?”
Kane looked surprised, but then he shrugged. “Sure. I just thought since you’re leaving…”
“Old friend, remember?” Faith said with a forced smile. She wasn’t exactly sure why she felt the need to see Tricia so badly. Yes, they had been friends growing up, but they hadn’t seen one another in over two years. Maybe it was the connection she’d made with Tricia’s kids. Or just putting closure on the whole missing person thing—like she needed to see Tricia to truly believe she’d been found. All Faith knew was she couldn’t walk away without checking in with Tricia.
“Okay,” Kane said, still sounding reluctant. “But it’s not a pretty sight.”
“I understand,” Faith said, steeling herself for the worst. She pushed against the door, leaving Kane in the hallway. But in spite of the warning, she still couldn’t stop her sudden intake of breath when she saw Tricia. Her friend’s once beautiful face was bruised, her lip stitched up and swollen.
Tricia turned at the sound of the door opening, and her eyes went wide with shock.
“Faith. What are you doing here? How did you—” And then her questions stopped as Faith sat down beside her, slipping her arm around Tricia’s shoulders, careful to avoid the arm caught up in a sling.
Tricia clung to her, burying her head on Faith’s shoulder, crying. Faith closed her eyes and felt her own past and heartache swell upward in unison with Tricia’s.
Two old friends clung together, sorrow joining them.
“Oh, honey,” Faith whispered. “I'm so sorry."
It was all she could say.
Finally, Faith drew back, they both wiped their eyes and noses with the tissues on the bedside table, and Tricia raised an eyebrow at her. “So, you’re here with Kane?” she asked. “You guys back together?”
“No.” Faith shook her head. “Absolutely not. It’s a long story, but I’ve been at the ranch for a few days taking care of your kiddos, actually.”
“Oh?” Tricia leaned forward. “How are they? Does Cash still suck his thumb? Is Hope having nightmares?”
“Um, I haven’t seen him do it. And yes, Hope does have nightmares, poor thing.”
“She’s such a sensitive soul,” Tricia said. Her lip trembled, but she was obviously making an effort to hold it together. “Kane said Lucinda brought them to the ranch. How did my dad react to that?” Tricia looked ashamed and, at the same time, defiant.
